New MY17 Nissan GT-R is a Legend Reborn
The jaw-dropping new MY17 installment of the Nissan GT-R landed via the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Bringing with it what can only be described as the biggest changes since the models inaugural unveiling in 2007, it’s a big deal indeed.
Admittedly, as soon as word of a potential unveiling landed, fans (myself included) were hoping for a completely redesigned supercar. However, despite the changes not being quite that extreme, Nissan have managed do deliver more than any of us ever imagined.
Marrying a new, aesthetically perfect and undeniably head turning front end with a luxurious interior that feels every bit befitting of royalty, the Japanese marque have also injected boot loads of hi-tech kit.
With so much to discuss we’ve broken the highlights down into three bite-size chunks:
The definition of a head-turner
In it’s latest installment, the ready-to-race GT-R gets a whole new enlarged, chrome framed and matt-black front grille. Essentially, it’s be designed in a way as to allow for improved engine cooling, but when combined with a new sweeping bonnet and front bumper makes for a mesmerizing mix.
It’s fair to say you could get lost in the curves and contours of this front-end, it’s design is just about pixel perfect. Everything just fits, which is somewhat usually for a car. After all, even the World’s best looking hypercars from the likes of Ferrari and Porsche have their imperfections.
Any how, on to the rear and those instantly recognizable circular rear lights have lived on. Meanwhile, redesigned bodywork and side vents, which sit alongside the chrome finished quad exhaust, enhance both air flow and aesthetics.
From the side, the GT-R’s higher belt line and more pronounced side sills are immediately obvious and work in tandem to create what can only be described as the most aggressive GT-R profile to date.
An unexpectedly luxurious interior
The GT-R hasn’t exactly been known for its interior prowess. However, the MY17 installment changes this and undoubtedly, in the process, sets a whole new standard for future iterations.
The first thing you’re likely to notice upon entering the cabin is the existence of a completely redesigned dashboard along with a more engaging instrument panel, both of which have been smothered with leather, as too are driving tools such as the steering wheel and gear knob, albeit in a contrasting colour.
As for the rest of the interior, it runs along a similar theme, all in, there’s tons of leather, all of which has been shaped, cut and stitched to the highest of standards. There’s also an unmistakable feeling of space and luxury.
Performance above all else
I’m sure we all know the number one reason why people choose to buy a GT-R, despite their individual credits it ain’t about the exterior aesthetics and it ain’t about the interior, despite it’s new found excellence. It’s all about the powerhouse that sits under the hood (well mostly).
In MY17 GT-R form there’s a handcrafted 3.8-litre 24-valve twin-turbo’d V6, essentially the same unit found in its predecessor, but it now delivers a hard to comprehend 570sps, that’s achieved at 6,000 rpm with 637Nm of torque.
In addition, the aforementioned powerhouse is matted to a newly refined 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. All things considered, it’s probably best described as a Godzilla fans heaven on earth and that’s before you even hear it roar.
So, what do the performance figures look like? In all honesty we haven’t got a clue as they’re yet to be unveiled, but it’s safe to say it’s going to be blisteringly quick of the mark.
